Description:

Standard model Sidehammer Pocket Revolver manufactured by Allen & Wheelock c. 1858-1861. The revolver has the standard model loading lever catch on the rear of the guard, four-inch octagon barrel, five-shot cylinder and two-piece walnut grips with flared butt. The barrel and frame are blue. The casehardened cylinder is roll engraved with a forest scene. The walnut grips have a high polish piano finish. The serial number "440" is stamped on the inside of the frame beneath the grips and on the inside of both grips. This revolver was formerly part of the famous William M. Locke Collection.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The revolver shows minimal firing wear and retains about 30% plus of the blue and casehardened finish. Most of the thin blue finish is present on the barrel. The blue finish remains on protected areas of the frame and trigger guard; the balance has a smooth silver-gray patina. The cylinder and hammer have traces of the muted case colors. The roll engraved cylinder scene is sharp. The revolver shows limited firing wear and has traces of flash pitting on the percussion nipples. The two-piece walnut grips are very good and retain at least 85% of the piano finish with some scattered handling marks.
