Description:

Also known as the "Transition Pepperbox-revolver", this model was manufactured circa 1858 into the early 1860s with a total production of only about 1,000. The small frame model is identical in profile to that of the medium and large frame, but noticeably and a hammer that is evenly rounded. The left barrel flat is marked "ALLEN & WHEELOCK. WORCESTER, VA./ALLEN'S PATENT APRIL 16 1845" and the cylinder is roll engraved with a wooded scene with deer and a marsh scene with ducks. The matching serial (batch) number "343" is marked on the inside of each grip panel, on the lower right rear barrel flat and on the right side of the front strap under the grip. The hammer spring and cylinder are numbered "342". More than likely an error an the factory during assembly. The revolver is manufactured without sights, blue finish with casehardened cylinder and hammer, and fitted with smooth varnished walnut grips.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The revolver retains 50% original blue finish, mainly on the barrel, with a smooth gray patina on the balance. The cylinder retains at least 80% bright case colors. The grips are very good with some nicks and chips in the varnish and a small scratch on the left panel. The markings and cylinder scene are clear. The action is fine.
