Description:

The "Northwest" Indian trade gun was a multi-purpose weapon designed for the hunt and war. It would be loaded with a single round ball or shot and features an overall lightweight design, front sight, oversized trigger and trigger guard for winter use, and the serpentine/dragon side plate that Native people looked for when trading for arms. This fine example has no visible maker marks, but like most Northwest guns, it originates from England as demonstrated by the Birmingham and Board of Ordnance proofmarks seen on the left barrel flat. It has the North West Company's Sitting Fox mark on the barrel flat and in front of the hammer on the lock plate.

Rating Definition:

Very good. This piece features an attractive brown patina with a minor scrape about midway on the top of the barrel. The brass side plate, buttplate, and ramrod tubes have an aged patina. The hammer is a blacksmith made period installed replacement. The stock has 1 1/2" of the forend absent with the remaining forend splint down the middle. There are some areas where the varnish is worn down on the forend and at the breech and a dark indent on the right hand side forend. The butt stock has various minor scrapes and dents including a group of striations on the left side. There are some scattered white speckles on the stock and barrel. The ramrod is absent.
