Description:

This is one of the few known fur trade era double barrel shotguns. W&G Chance of Birmingham manufactured trade guns for the Indian and trapper trade in the first half of the 19th century. Chance weapons were shipped to the American Fur Company and after its demise in 1847, to Pierre Chouteau Jr. and Co. in St. Louis. The included research notes that Chance double barrel shotguns are confirmed to have been shipped to Chouteau for the Indian and trapper trade. Each lockplate of this converted side by side shotgun is marked "W&G/CHANCE", and the right barrel is marked "LONDON". It features a fixed front bead and u-notch rear sights, staggered double triggers, brass trigger guard, butt plate, and ramrod tube. A ramrod, ramrod tube, trigger plate, and plate from the wrist stock are absent. It also includes consignor research.

Rating Definition:

Fair. This shotgun features an attractive brown patina on the barrel and lock plates. The percussion hammers feature a gray/brown patina, and the brass has an aged brown patina. The underside of the barrels has a section of solder about midway where an additional ramrod tube is absent. The well worn stock has a portion of the forend absent, repaired cracks at the remaining forend, and additional cracks at the wrist. The buttstock has various scrapes, marks and dings
