Description:

Buckskin coats and hunting frocks were popular with frontiersman, hunters, and fur trappers for centuries due to their warmth and durability. Fringe, although also stylistic, helped the coats shed rain and dry faster. Unlike many hunting frocks, buckskin coats had a waist belt/tie, toggle closure, or, in some instance such as this, a button up closure. This buckskin coat was found in Montana and believed to date to the last quarter of the 19th century. It is nice and heavy and is fabric lined with an interior pocket on the lower right. It has fringe along the bottom, sleeves, shoulders, and collar. It has straight stitched seams that were well done and likely done using a machine given the tight weave. The leather edges have a varied zig-zag pattern.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The coat has a well aged look with less color fading on the left side. It has some small round repairs, replaced or absent buttons, some fringe absent on the left rear of the collar, and various stains and marks including some red on the left wrist. The left sleeve has a section that is dried and inflexible. One section of the interior lining has come loose, and there are some other imperfections. The interior has an aged yellow look with some stains but is in good condition given its age and use.
