Description:

Deluxe, engraved, Burgess slide action shotgun with the Damascus twist barrel manufactured c. 1893. The Burgess gun company was established in 1882 by Andrew Burgess, a prolific gun designer. Burgess was credited with numerous mechanical patents for various firearms. Burgess shotguns were manufactured from 1892-1899. In 1899 the Burgess company was purchased by Winchester and withdrawn from the market. The serial number, "1253" is hand engraved on the underside of the receiver. The shotgun has a Damascus twist steel barrel that is marked with the Burgess three-line patent dates. "BURGESS GUN CO./ BUFFALO, N.Y. U.S.A." is hand engraved on the top of the receiver on either side of the sighting groove. The sides of the receiver are decorated with delicately engraved game panel scenes. The balance of receiver sides, the top and bottom of the receiver, upper tang, bottom of the trigger guard and front edge of the forearm are decorated with fine English style scroll engraving. The stock and forearm are highly figured, fancy grain, walnut with a high polish piano finish. The forearm has fine checkering. The stock has a distinctive, gutta-percha, pistol grip that functions as part of the pump action mechanism and a black, hard rubber checkered buttplate embossed "BURGESS GUN CO" in a circle surrounding a dog and pheasant. Length of pull is 12 3/4 inches.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The shotgun retains 60% of the original damascus and blue finish. The barrel and receiver have a smooth silver-blue patina. Significant amounts of blue finish are present in protected areas. The delicate scroll engraving and detailed game scenes are crisp and sharp. The highly figured walnut stock is in very fine condition and retains most of the original piano finish with minimal handling wear. The forearm is also in very fine condition with moderate handling wear. The checkered portions of the gutta-percha pistol grip are worn with a section absent from the right side and mild cracking. Mechanically excellent. This is an exceptional example of a scarce, deluxe engraved, Burgess slide action shotgun.
