Description:

The first production firearm chambered for the .357 Magnum cartridge, the Magnum set new standards in firepower and accuracy. Each Registered Magnum was built to the specifications of the buyer, then registered by number to the owner by Douglas Wesson, the then Vice President of Smith & Wesson. This particular Magnum, number 3514, was manufactured in 1938 and according to the accompanying factory letter was shipped to John K. Carmichael Inc., 5 Centre Market Pl. in New York City with a 6 inch barrel, blue finish and checkered magna grips. The letter also states: "It is interesting to note that 5 Center Market Pl. is also the location of the John Jovino Co. at this time and was cross the street from the New York Police Department. This revolver was billed at $39.00 and appears as have been a special order since it was not shipped to the John Jovino Co." The revolver has subsequently been masterfully engraved and gold inlaid by Master Engraver Alvin A. White. Floral scroll engraving with a matte background decorates the barrel, frame, trigger guard and cylinder flats. There is gold inlaid wire bordering and accents on all of the engraved surfaces. The left toe under the grip has the silver recessed "AA WHITE/ENG." hallmark. The left side of the barrel is marked "SMITH & WESSON" and the right side "S&W .357 MAGNUM". The right front of the frame is marked "MADE IN U.S.A." The frame is marked with the registered number "REG 3514". The matching serial number is marked on the butt and on the barrel inside the shroud, and the matching assembly number "12417" is marked on the frame and crane. Blue finish with casehardened trigger, blue hammer with polished sides, and fitted with replacement, deluxe, Roper, checkered walnut grips with "637" scratched into the inside of each panel.

Rating Definition:

Extremely fine. Masterfully embellished by Master engraver Alvin White. The revolver retains 90% plus custom blue finish with some mild thinning on the top rear back strap, muzzle and some light oxidation on the barrel shroud. Half of the bright case colors remain on the trigger. All of the gold inlay remains. The grips are very fine with some light handling marks and sharp checkering. The markings and engraving remain crisp and clear. The action is excellent.
