Description:

This is a solid example of an original Grandpa Nambu pistol that is complete with a beautiful, professionally made combination wooden shoulder stock/holster. The Type 1902 pistol, termed the Grandpa Nambu, was the first successful Japanese designed, self-loading pistol. Approximately 2,400 Type 1902 Nambu Pistols were manufactured in total by the Tokyo Artillery Arsenal at Koishikawa, Tokyo between 1903 and 1906. Produced in very limited numbers, the Type 1902 Nambu is a rare and desirable pistol and it has been estimated by authors Harry Derby and James Brown (Japanese Military Handguns 1899-1945) that based on their survey, fewer than 150 'Grandpa' Nambu pistols exist in U.S. collections today. The distinctive features of this model are the very small trigger guard, with the back strap slotted for a wooden shoulder stock and the distinctive long-range tangent rear sight mounted on top of the rear of the receiver. The rear sight is graduated from 50 to 500 meters. The top of the chamber area is stamped with the four-intertwined cannon ball symbol of the Tokyo Artillery Arsenal at Koishikawa, and the right side of the receiver is marked with characters signifying "Nambu Type" above the serial number "2322". The pistol has finely checkered hardwood grip panels. As noted this example is complete with one matching, nickel plated, eight-round magazine that has the original wooden base with checkered sides. The back side or spine of the magazine is correctly stamped with serial number "2322". The stock that accompanies this rare early pistol has been professionally built to exacting standards that essentially duplicate the original in size, shape and metal hardware, that totally compliments the pistol.

Rating Definition:

Very good with a completely browned out finish on the metal surfaces. The grips straps and recoil spring housing show oxidation and minor light pitting, with some heavier pitting on the sides of the frame under the grips, which is typical for these early pistols as they saw heavy use in the Far East as well as in the Navy where they were exposed to salt spray. The stock is in like new condition which functions correctly in that the telescoping extension actually works and locks in place and the lid is tight and closes correctly. As noted this pistol has matching numbers (except for the right grips, which is unnumbered) and the stock.
