Description:

This is an example of a very rare post-64 "U.S. PROPERTY" marked Winchester model 70 target rifle that was manufactured in 1967, that is fitted with an even rarer "USMC PROPERTY" marked Lyman Super Targetspot rifle scope. The USMC was still using the Model 70s as both target rifle for international match competition and pseudo-sniper rifle work in Vietnam until the 1960s and early 1970s until the USMC finished fielding the Remington M40 sniper rifles. The post-64 Model 70 was almost identical to the pre-64 models except for some of the manufacturing/fabrication of the various parts and they were equipped with a new "push-feed" type bolt and short sliding extractor and redesigned bolt cocking piece. The heart of these rifles, the barrel, was still manufactured in the tried and true Winchester manner ensuring exceptional accuracy. The barrel has the standard, although shorter Winchester factory markings followed by: "MODEL---70 308 WIN---". The left side of the receiver has been inscribed with the "U.S./PROPERTY" markings, followed by the "WINCHESTER/TRADE MARK" on the receiver side wall. The top of the receiver is correctly drilled and tapped for scope blocks and the rear bridge is correctly clip-slotted. The bolt was factory jeweled and is still in the original "in the white" condition with the matching serial number "G863497" etched on the under side of the bolt. The rifle is fitted with the standard Winchester factory target style stock with a Winchester black rubber buttplate. It has been properly glass bedded and the barrel channel relieved. Currently it is fitted with the original scope blocks on the barrel and receiver and it comes equipped with an original USMC marked and issued Lyman Super Targetspot scope. These scopes in themselves are very rare in that only an estimated 300 scopes were ever purchased by the USMC. It is a 20X scope with the standard two block two line patent dates and scope model markings with "USMC PROPERTY" 17205 markings factory roll stamped below the model. The scope has the standard fine crosshair with micrometer mounts and comes complete with the screw on end caps. This scarce rifle/scope combination set comes with a Vietnam era green web sling. The consignor notes, that only 300 of these Lyman sniper scopes were actually shipped to the Marines. He also states that the rifle and scope were made and shipped on the same date and it and the rifle are documented in the book: "The One Round War" by Peter R Senich.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 90% of the original blue finish overall with edge and high spot wear with clear sharp markings and proofs. The stock is in very good condition with minor light handling marks and some pressure dents on the sides and pistol grip area from actual field use and shooting. The scope also retains 95% of the blue finish overall with edge and high spot wear with 95% of the black finish on the mounts with clear sharp markings and proofs. The optics are clear and sharp. A very scarce Vietnam War Sniper rifle rig.
