Description:

This is a very fine example of a highly desirable U.S. Remington-UMC Model 1911 semi-automatic pistol. These pistols were produced during WWI in an attempt to supply the U.S. Army with sufficient pistols until the Colt company got into full production. A total of approximately 21,676 pistols were manufactured and the serial number of this example put this into the very, very end of the production series. These pistols were nicely made and functioned correctly as long as the parts remained together as the company never achieved any success with the Government's requirement of interchangeability of parts. Consequently after they completed this single contract, they never produced any more M1911 pistols for the Government. During the post-war years most pistols and parts were disposed from inventory as they were not interchangeable with the Colt 1911 pistol. It has the later model slide which is marked on the left side, "PATENTED DEC. 19. 1905/FEB. 14. 1911. AUG 19., 1913./COLTS PT. F.A. MFG. CO.", the circled "REMINGTON/UMC" in the middle and "MANUFACTURED BY/REMINGTON ARMS UMC CO. INC./BRIDGEPORT, CONN. U.S.A." The right side of the slide is marked "MODEL OF 1911/U.S. ARMY CALIBER 45". The rear of the slide is marked with an "Eagle Head/I38" above the firing pin hole. The left side of the frame is marked "UNITED STATES PROPERTY" towards the front end and the "E.E.C." of the U.S. Ordnance inspector Major Edmund E. Chapman, with a partial Eagle Head E2 proof by the magazine catch release button. The right side of the frame is marked with the serial "NO 21597" and a single number "2" inspector's number on the front portion of the trigger guard bow. The barrel is the correct blue version that has the single "P" proof on top of the chamber area. It has the early 1911 style checkered slide stop and narrow checkered thumb safety, short grip safety, flat mainspring housing with the lanyard loop and a single "E" proof on the bottom. The hammer is also the early wide Colt pattern with the fine checkering on the spur. The grips are the early walnut diamond checkered patterns and it is complete with three blue half-tone magazine with the pinned on base.

Rating Definition:

Extremely fine with 85% plus of the original blue finish overall with edge and high spot wear with thinning on the front grip strap and browning/oxidation on the main spring housing. The top and sides of the slide shows spotting and light blue loss. The grips are very fine with nice sharp, distinct checkering on both sides with a pressure dent on the left side below the diamond. An exceptional original example of a WWI era Remington/UMC Model 1911 pistol. Very few Model 1911 collections possess this fine of an example!
