Description:

From 1895 to 1903 a number of "US" marked Single Action Army revolvers, like this one, were returned to either the Colt factory or Springfield Armory where they were modified to 5 1/2 inch barrel length, dismantled and refinished, often with little regard to which gun the refinished parts came from, resulting in a mix of serial numbers and markings. (The writer believes this revolver to be a Springfield Armory rework). These revolvers have a 5 1/2 inch barrel, casehardened frame and blue cylinder, grip frame and barrel. The serial numbers are mixed on these altered models and they were remarked by inspectors of the era. This revolver is serial numbered "4382" on the frame, "32757" on the trigger guard, "49281" on the backstrap and the cylinder is unmarked. It bears the standard one line address on top of the barrel, "P" and "D.F.C." marked on the bottom of the barrel and the three line, three patent date marking on the left side of the frame followed by "U.S." The loading gate is unnumbered. It has the later oval style ejector rod head, standard blade front and frame notch rear sights and is fitted with smooth one piece walnut grips with "1877" over "DAL" cartouche on the left side and "?H" cartouche on the right side.

Rating Definition:

Very good as refinished (after Arsenal refurbishment). The revolver retains 70% blue finish with areas of gray patina on the grip straps and some scattered minor spotting. The hammer and frame retain 85% case colors with a smooth silver gray on the balance. The patent marking area is indented and has been restamped. The grip is good with wear and minor chips along the bottom edge and overall some minor dings and dents. The restamped markings are clear. The action is fine.
