Manufactured between 1867 and 1881, with estimated production of less than 2,000 Sporting Rifles. The top barrel flat ahead of the rear sight is marked " PHOENIX. CAL. 38.", the upper tang is marked "PATENT MAY. 26. 74." (mostly covered by a tang mounted peep sight), and the matching serial number "18" is marked on the lower tang, bottom of the breechblock, on the bottom barrel flat under the forearm and on the inside of the forearm. The Whitney name did not appear on these rifles. The barrel is equipped with a folding Beach globe front sight and folding two leaf rear sight. All blue finish and mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and replacement straight grip stock.

Very good. The rifle shows signs of some cleaning with traces of the original darkened blue finish in protected areas. There are a few minor dings on the barrel. The refinished, lightly sanded wood is fair with a few minor dents and handling marks. The barrel marking is crisp and clear. The action is fine.

The barrel is equipped with a blade front and a two leaf folding rear sight. Mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate with a compartment in the butt stock (cleaning rod not included).

Very good. The metal surfaces have a smooth mottled brown and gray patina. The wood is fair with a crude "M" carved into the upper left rear of the forearm, some dark areas on the stock, and overall scattered minor dents, dings and scratches. The markings are clear. The action is fine.
