Manufactured between 1867 and 1881 with estimated production of the Sporting Rifle at less than 2,000. The breechblock is hinged on the right side of the receiver and lifts upward to load. Correctly marked only "PATENT MAY. 26, 74 PHOENIX." on top of the barrel just ahead of the rear sight. The Whitney name did not appear on these rifles and "45 CAL. 70 GR. C.F." at the breech. Ahead of the caliber marking is stamped "V. KINDLER East Saginaw". One of the largest sporting goods stores in the state of Michigan, Kindler was established in 1867 as a retailer and wholesaler of firearms and ammunition. The matching serial number "5632" is marked on the lower tang, underside of the breechblock and on the bottom of the barrel under the forearm. The barrel is equipped with a blade front sight and a folding leaf rear sight. The barrel was finished blue and the receiver, trigger guard and buttplate were casehardened. Mounted with a smooth varnished walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate.

Good. The metal surfaces have a smooth mottled brown patina with some silver gray on the receiver. The wood is also good with two (one small, one large) repairs on the stock toe and overall scattered minor dings and dents. The markings are clear. The action is fine.

Manufactured between 1867 and 1881 with a total production of less than 5,000. The top of the barrel is marked "PHOENIX. CAL. 14". The Whitney name did not appear on these shotguns. The matching serial number "242" is marked on the lower tang, on the bottom of the barrel under the forearm, and the breechblock is marked "252". Single brass bead sight, blue barrel, casehardened remaining parts and mounted with a smooth varnished walnut forearm and straight grip stock with an iron shotgun buttplate. Length of pull is 13 3/8 inches.

Good. The metal surfaces have a smooth mottled brown patina. The wood is fair with scattered minor dings, dents and scratches. The marking is clear. The action is fine.
