Manufactured between 1867 and 1881 with estimated production of less than 2,000 sporting Rifles. The breechblock is hinged on the right side of the receiver and lifts upward to load. This rifle has a heavy replacement heavy barrel which gauges at 41 caliber, is part octagon, and has a folding front globe sight and two folding leaf rear sight. There are no visible markings on the rifle except for the serial number on the lower tang and "D/D" on the left side of the upper tang (consignor notes state that is for David Defibaugh". The marking is visible due to a chip on the stock wrist. Mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a checkered flat buttplate. The rifle weighs approximately 12 1/2 pounds.

Fair as modified. The metal surfaces have a smooth mottled gray patina. The wood is also good with a repaired crack along the upper right side and splintering on the upper left side. The stock has been modified, the comb taken down a bit and the butt flattened (should be crescent) with the above mentioned chip on the wrist and a moderate chip at the rear of the tang. The action is fine.

Manufactured between 1867 and 1881. Correctly marked only "PATENT MAY. 26, 74 PHOENIX.." on top of the barrel just ahead of the rear sight followed by "CAL 44" and "CF" at the breech. The Whitney name did not appear on these rifles. The matching serial number "3135" is marked on the lower tang, underside of the breechblock and on the bottom of the barrel under the forearm. The barrel is equipped with a blade front and a homemade fixed iron rear sights. Mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate.

Good. The metal surfaces have a dark brown patina with some scattered minor pitting. The wood is also good with a couple of moderate chips on the upper right front of the forearm, a couple of dark areas on the stock, and overall minor dings, dents and scratches. The markings are legible. The action is fine.
