This is a hammerless single shot breechloading rifle also known as the Howard Thunderbolt. It is estimated that less than 2,000 of these were manufactured between 1866 and 1870. The serial number is marked on the left side of the lever link. The left side rear of the barrel is marked "C. HOWARD. PATENTED. SEPT. 26 &OCT. 10. 1865 - OCT. 28. 1862" and the right side is marked "MANUF'D FOR HOWARD-BROTHERS- BY-WHITNEY - ARMS - CO - WHITNEYVILLE. CONN". Fixed iron front sight and adjustable rear sight with a checkered black walnut straight grip stock with an iron crescent buttplate.

The metal components are mostly a smooth brown patina with some minor marks. The tang has some minor pitting The stock is very good with several minor scratches and dings. The action is functional but the lever is loose cocked and the barrel is slightly loose.
