Description:

Measuring 36 inches in overall length, this sword follows the pattern of what the book "Louis Froelich: Arms-Maker to the Confederacy" by McAden and Fonville describes on page 50 as the "Etched Blade Staff & Field Sword" by Louis Froelich, with a note that only four etched blades were known at the time of writing (circa 2008), with only two featuring a scroll pattern. A Bavarian immigrant who established himself in North Carolina in 1861, Froelich worked briefly as a button maker before establishing the Wilmington Sword Manufactory, later known as the C.S.A. Arms Factory. The output of the Arms Factory included a wide assortment of leather gear and martial accoutrements, in addition to a full spectrum of Confederate edged weapons, including swords and lances. During the course of the war, Froelich would need to rebuild his factory three times, once due to fire and twice due to Union attack. The blade measures 30 1/2 inches long, with single fullers, and a panel of scroll engraving on each side. The grip is black oilcloth secured with a steel wire wrap, brass ferrule and pommel cap, and a cast brass guard with "XXII" cut into the side and "CSA" cast into the guard. With an unmarked brass fitted iron sheath.

Rating Definition:

Fair, but well above average for a Confederate weapon. The blade shows a dark, near black patina overall, with significant pitting and roughly 40% of the original etching. The brass shows a fine aged patina, with minimal wear on the grip. The scabbard is fair, comparable to the blade on the iron components and showing well-aged brass. Subjected to hard use and the rigors of warfare in all seasons, Confederate edged weapons are scarce in any condition.
