Description:

Model 1863 S.A. revolver manufactured by the Starr Arms Co. of New York, New York, as part of a 25,000 gun contract with the Ordnance Department in 1863. The revolver has a high polish blue finish on the round barrel and six-shot cylinder and a military blue finish on the frame, trigger guard and back strap. The loading lever and hammer are color casehardened. The one-piece grip is oil finished walnut. "STAR PATENT JAN. 15, 1856" is roll stamped on the right side of the frame and "'STARR ARMS Co. NEW YORK" is roll-stamped on the left side. The serial number "37994" is visible on the front of the frame below the loading lever, inside of the hammer well and the side of the cylinder. All of the visible serial numbers match. Single, block letter "M" and "C" Ordnance sub-inspection marks are stamped on most components. Script, three letter, Ordnance final inspection and sub-inspection marks are stamped near the bottom of both sides of the grip. Although the Starr Single Action revolvers were delivered to the Ordnance Department throughout 1864, the revolvers were issued in only limited numbers during the Civil War.

Rating Definition:

Excellent plus. The revolver retains 97% of the original blue finish and 99% of the casehardened finish. The revolver appears to be in unfired condition and shows only very minor storage wear. All of the Starr markings, serial umbers and Ordnance sub-inspection marks on the various components are crisp. The grip is in excellent plus condition with a few minor storage marks and sharp Ordnance inspection marks. This is an exceptional example of a U.S. contract Starr Model 1863 Single Action Revolver.
