Description:

Navy Model Percussion Revolver manufactured by the Whitney Arms Company of New Haven, Connecticut c. 1865. This revolver has the 5th Type features which include: (1) seven-groove rifling, (2) large brass trigger guard, (3) "Whitneyville" marked shield on cylinder scene, (4) "wedge" type loading lever latch, and (5) six stop cylinder. The revolver frame has the distinctive top strap with sight groove and the barrel has a brass pin front sight. The cylinder is delicately roll-engraved with an eagle, shield and naval vessel. The barrel, frame and cylinder have a military blue finish with niter blue screws. The loading lever and hammer are color casehardened. The two-piece walnut grips are oil finished. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "E. WHITNEY/N. HAVEN" in two lines. The serial number "29459" is stamped on the underside of the barrel, top of the loading lever and inside of both grips. All of the visible serial numbers match. The Whitney Arms Company manufactured at least 33,000 Navy Model revolvers from the 1850's thru 1866. The Ordnance Department purchased 11,184 Whitney Navy Model revolvers from various dealers between 1861 and 1863. The U.S. Navy purchased an additional 6,276 Navy Model revolvers directly from the Whitney Arms Company. The U.S. Navy revolvers had Navy markings.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. This revolver is all original, appears to be unfired and is in outstanding condition. The barrel, frame and cylinder retain at least 90% plus of the dull, military blue finish with flaking and handling wear on the back strap and light turn marks on the cylinder. The hammer and loading lever retain 98% of the color casehardened finish. The brass trigger guard has an attractive, untouched patina. The walnut grips are in excellent plus condition; the only wear is a small chip in the toe of the front grip. The delicate cylinder scene is complete. The Whitney legend and serial numbers are sharp. This is an outstanding example of an important Civil War revolver that would be difficult to find in a better condition.
