Description:

This is a scarce Kerr's patent percussion revolver with a Confederate "J.S./anchor" marking. The "J.S./Anchor" stamping on Kerr revolvers is discussed in detail by William A. Albaugh III in "Confederate Handguns". Albaugh documented a number of Confederate Kerr revolvers with this marking and concluded that the "J.S./Anchor" stamp was applied as an export stamp for revolvers purchased by the Confederate government. "Confederate Revolvers" by William A. Gary briefly discusses the mark and that it is believed that the "JS" is for J. Smiles, a stock maker in London. The lockplate is marked "LONDON ARMOURY" and "KERR'S PATENT 3240" is marked on the right side of the frame with the matching serial number also marked on the cylinder. A round "LONDON/ARMOURY" stamp is on the lower left side of the frame, and proof marks are on the upper left barrel flat and cylinder. Fitted with a checkered grip with a steel buttplate with a lanyard ring. Some components on the left side of the frame are absent.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The revolver has a brown patina overall with some traces of the original finish. There are various marks and dings on the gun overall especially on the cylinder and the top of the barrel. The grips are good with some marks, chips, and dings. Most markings remain clear, including the anchor, but the J.S. is faint. The action requires some repairs.
