Description:

Sharps breech-loading carbine manufactured by Robins & Lawrence of Windsor, Vermont, c. 1853-1855. Robins & Lawrence manufactured approximately 5000 Sharps Model 1852 Carbines. The carbine has the distinctive slant breech with Sharps patent pellet primer mounted in the lockplate, retaining spring on the right rear section of the forearm, round barrel with 'squirrel-ear' rear sight, sling bar and ring mounted on the left side of the receiver and barrel band. The carbine has a brass barrel band, patchbox and buttplate. The lockplate is roll-stamped: "C.SHARPS/PATENT/1852" in three lines. The serial number "3830" is hand stamped on the upper tang. There are no visible barrel markings.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The carbine shows moderate-heavy wear and has been re-blued on the receiver. The barrel has a smooth brown patina. The right side of the delicate rear sight is broken. The lock has a dark patina. The Sharps patent markings are faint and the serial number appears to have been re-stamped. There is flash pitting on the lock plate, receiver, breech block and inside of the hammer and pellet primer. The brass furniture has been polished and has minor handling marks. The stock and forearm have been lightly sanded and re-finished. This is a good example of a scarce and important Sharps Model 1852 Carbine.
