Approximately 15,600 of these carbines were manufactured with a majority used to fill Civil War military orders. This particular carbine has a faint military inspection cartouche on the left side of the stock wrist. The left side of the frame is marked "MERWIN & BRAY/AGT'S. N.Y." above the serial number and the right side is marked "BALLARD'S PATENT/NOV 5 1861". Pinched blade front sight, two leaf rear sight and a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with carbine buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Very good as partially refinished. Cold blue has been applied to the barrel and the remaining metal surfaces have a bright gray appearance. There is some minor pitting. The refinished wood is also very good with a long hairline crack on the buttstock and some minor handling marks. The cartouche is lightly visible. Mechanically fine.
