Description:

This is a fine example of a martially marked U.S. Remington Split Breech Type II Carbine. The barrel is equipped with pinched blade front and folding leaf rear sights. Most of the components have single letter inspector markings. The casehardened frame has an unidentified swirl pattern mark at the breech and a saddle ring and bar mounted on the left side with the upper tang stamped "REMINGTON'S ILION, N.Y./PAT. DEC. 23, 1863 MAY 3 & NOV 16, 1864". The barrel, single barrel band, sling swivels, split breechblock, and hammer are blue. Mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock fitted with a casehardened buttplate and sling swivels on the barrel band and buttstock. The left side of the stock wrist is stamped with clear "DAP" and "JT" script cartouches and additional unclear marks on the right side of the butt. Remington bought most of the 15,000 carbines produced back from the government and then re-sold them to the French for use in the Franco-Prussian War.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The carbine retains 60% of the original finish with the finish thinning on the barrel and a gray/brown patina on the exposed areas. The block and hammer have some finish wear from use. The dark case colors are still visible on the frame and buttplate. There is some light oxidation, scratches, and marks throughout. The wood is very good with many dents and marks. Mechanically excellent.
