Description:

This is an example of a Second Model Merrill Civil War carbine. The late style lock plate features the Second Model markings: "J.H.MERRILL BALTO/PAT JULY 1858,/APL.9. MAY 21-28-61" under the bolster, eagle/shield marked in front of the hammer and "1863" marked behind the hammer. The breech latch is marked with the Merrill name and patent date, along with the serial number. There are "L" sub-inspection marks and "T.K.L." marked under the breech lever. It has a brass barrel band, trigger guard and buttplate which is marked "US" on the heel. Mounted on a straight grip stock with a saddle ring bar and ring mounted on the left side flat and featuring a blade front sight and rear sight with two folding leaves marked "3" and "5". There is a "RKW" cartouche just above the saddle ring bar and "DD" carved into the right side of the stock. "DD" is also scratched into the trigger guard tang.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The carbine remains bright with some small areas of oxidation and some scratches and marks. The brass has an attractive aged patina. The stock is also very good with legible cartouche, various dings, dents, scratches, and marks. Mechanically fine.
