Description:

This fine example of a Remington Model 1863 has the appropriate eaglehead followed by "U.S./V.P." on the upper barrel at the breech with "B.H. STEEL/F H" on the left barrel flat. The tang is dated 1863 as is the back of the lock plate which is also marked with "American eagle/REMINGTON/ILION N.Y." in front of the hammer and "U.S." at the front. Features include: appropriate blade front and folding leaf rear sights, right side bayonet lug and trumpet head ramrod. It is mounted on a straight wrist walnut stock with brass patchbox and buttplate, and two clear cartouches on the left side above the trigger. Sling swivels are mounted on the bottom of the front barrel band and the front of the trigger guard. A spare nipple is in place inside the patchbox.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The barrel retains 95% of the original blue with some fading to pewter on the midsection and around the tang and breech with some light oxidation. The lockplate shows some nice mottled remnants of the casehardening and is primarily a dark gray patina with some light oxidation. The brass furniture has an aged patina. The stock is very fine with crisp edges and clear cartouches with some overall light handling/storage marks. Mechanically excellent.
