Description:

Measuring 36 inches overall, with a 30 1/4 inch double fuller blade, showing etched patriotic and scroll designs on both sides, "J.H" on the right ricasso and "1862" on the left. Gilt brass hilt, with cut-through floral designs on the guard, a wire wrapped grip, and the inscription "Edwd. F. Curtis/R.I.V." on the underside of the guard. With an iron scabbard, outfitted with a floral engraved throat, leaf engraved suspension bands and a floral tip. Included with the sword is a large grouping of research on Edward Curtis, which indicate that he entered service with the 1st Rhode Island Volunteer Infantry in April 1861 as a Private on a 3-month enlistment, during which he lost a finger at the Battle of Bull Run. Curtis re-entered service in 1862, this time as a 2nd Lieutenant with the 3rd Rhode Island Artillery, leaving again in 1864 as a First Lieutenant. Post-Civil War pension applications indicate that he was alive into the 1880's.

Rating Definition:

Good. The blade shows a mixed gray patina overall, with some patches of mild pitting and scattered dings. The hilt is good, with traces of the original gilt finish, showing a well aged brass on the remainder, with some opening of the grip seam and mild handling marks on the hilt. The scabbard is good, with a deep brown color on the body, well aged brass fittings, and scattered dings.
