Description:

Active from 1857 to 1900 in Philadelphia, Jacob J. Teufel & Brother was an United States Army supplier of surgical instruments before, during and after the Civil War. The tiger-striped mahogany case measures 16 inches long and 6 inches wide, with an unmarked brass plaque on the lid, red velvet lining and no visible makers marks. Twenty instruments in fitted pockets, mostly with "J.J.TEUFEL" markings, and one is marked “TIEMANN”. A divider retains the instruments in the lid. Those instruments include, a Capitol amputation saw, rongeurs, bone-forceps, retractable-point trepanning drill with checkered-ebony handle, metacarpal-saw, and bullet-forceps. The lower portion of the case contains, three amputation knives with checkered ebony handles, a tenaculum, two bone chisels, trepanning elevator, a director, artery forceps, scissors, tourniquet and a silver bullet probe. The covered pocket holds silver suture wire.

Rating Definition:

Very good, the instruments showing mild spotting and handling marks on the tools, the silver bullet probe and director with some oxidation and an old glue repair to the saw handle. The case is fine.
