Description:

James Fitch was a dealer and importer in "fancy goods, sporting goods, rifles, pistols, etc." in the middle of the 19th century. His partnership with Howard Waldo covered most of the Civil War period. They operated a shop in New York City and their name was put on the revolvers and other guns by the manufacturers who actually made them. This one was made for them by Bacon Mfg. Co. of Norwich, CT. It is the rarest marking found on the Bacon revolvers with an estimated 100 manufactured circa 1864. The handful of specimens known are all in the 300 serial number range. This revolver is marked "FITCH & WALDO, N. Y." on top of the barrel. A factory scroll engraving is present on the rear frame sides. It has a round barrel, 5-shot fluted cylinder, varnished grips, and ball type loading lever latch. The barrel, cylinder, and right grip panel are numbered to the gun.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The revolver retains 50% of the bright original blue finish with the balance between smooth gray and smooth brown patina. The loading lever retains some vivid original case colors. A few patches of minor pitting are present but contained to the left recoil shield and cylinder. The grips are very fine with a few minor handing marks and retaining most of the varnish. Mechanically fine. A fine example of a very rare Fitch & Waldo marked Bacon Mfg. Co. revolver.
