Description:

This side by side shotgun has a presentation silver plaque on the left side of the butt inscribed "Presented to/Frederick Girling PDCR/by the Brothers of Court/Sir Colin Campbell for/services rendered by him/to the above/Court June 13th 1866." Coincidentally, this is the same date U.S. Congress passed the 14th Amendment. Colin Campbell (1792-1863) was the oldest son of Colin Macliver and was mistakenly entered into the British Army as Colin Campbell when his uncle Colonel John Campbell presented him to the Duke of York. He kept the name and rose through the ranks of the British Army fighting in multiple conflicts including the War of 1812 and Crimean War. In 1857 during the Indian Mutiny, he became Commander-in-Chief of India. The shotgun has no markings aside from the plaque and the English proofs and numbers on the bottom of the barrels. The shotgun has a single bead front sight on the front of the concave rib and features scroll engraving on the locks, breech of the barrel, tangs, ramrod tailpipe, trigger guard, and buttplate. It has double triggers with a 14 inch length of pull. The ramrod has a flared brass tip and a long brass end. It is fitted with a straight wrist English walnut stock with checkered forend and grip. It comes in a wooden case with fitted green velvet lined interior containing a powder flask with leave and animal engraving, long thin shot pouch with sling, cleaning tools, and cap tin.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The barrels retain 50% of the dark brown Damascus pattern with light high edge wear and a few light scratches and marks. The inscription plaque has a smokey silver patina. The buttplate has traces of the fire blue finish with otherwise a brown patina and oxidation. The other components also feature a generally smooth brown patina. The wood is very fine with high gloss and sharp checkering and some scattered scratches, small dings including along the edges of the forend, and some small cracks on the toe of the butt. Mechanically excellent with crisp engraving. The case has a crack in the lid and an aged patina on the brass components including the ring and round inlay at the center. The velvet interior has some wear and small patches absent. The accessories overall are fine.
