Description:

The India pattern was the standard infantry musket from 1797-1854. This musket would have been manufactured and used in the early 19th century and is vertically marked with "TOWER" behind the cock on the lock plate and horizontally "crown/GR" for King George III in front with a "crown/broad arrow" (government ownership) proof below the pan. "70 RT 2 B" is marked on the top of the barrel with additional proofs on the left side near the breech. The British 70th Regiment of Foot 2nd Battalion was formed in 1804 as a draft finding unit stationed in the British Isles during the Napoleonic Wars and disbanded in 1815 at Dundee. Many 2nd Battalion soldiers were sent to the 1st Battalion which saw service in abroad most notably in France at the Battle of Salamanca and the Battle of Toulouse. It has brass regulation furniture including distinctive long ramrod pipes. It is mounted with a oil finished walnut stock with straight wrist and high comb with a stamp on the right side of the butt. Includes a bayonet marked "IH&Co1" near the base of the 15 1/4 inch blade. The bayonet mounts via the front sight/stud and has a leather sheath with brass ends.

Rating Definition:

Good. This musket has a light gray patina with some patches of brown patina forming with some pitting, marks, and scratches. The brass furniture has a light aged patina. The trigger guard has a crack at the front screw. There is some a electro-pencil mark on the bayonet above the markings. The bayonet sheath has the tip broken off but included. The wood is also good with a small section absent on the forend on the right side and a hairline crack extending down towards the front ramrod pipe and otherwise some dings, and marks overall. The markings are clear and legible. Mechanically fine.
