Description:

The patinated brass sextant frame has a protective black lacquer with a mahogany handle with a mounting point for the spring-loaded retention device in the case. The instrument is signed on the silver-inlaid graduated arc number "R 771" and marked "HEATH & Co Ltd NEW ELTHAM, LONDON./MADE FOR . SEWILL. MAKER TO THE ROYAL NAVY. LIVERPOOL”. The accessories included are 4 telescopes, 7 telescope sun filters (3 lower, 4 upper), adjusting tools, swiveling magnifier, and two unusual patented accessories: a “greatest-angle clamp” clamping arm with fine-adjustment screw and a “Heath’s Patent Definition Shade”. With a mahogany case, and a signed certification card from the “National Physical Laboratory Certificate of Examination, Class A” dated Jan. 1920.

Rating Definition:

Very good with a mixed patina on the arc, a few areas of bright brass, and a good strong lacquer finish overall. The instrument retains almost all of the original finish with some minor oxidation spots and handling marks. A few small scratches are present on the mirrors with some light spotting on the glass. The mahogany case is good; it has two minor shrinkage cracks on the lid and carries an inlet brass handle and description tag.
