Manufactured in 1889, Colt manufactured approximately 7,366 Model 1883 shotguns between 1883 and 1895. Single brass bead sight on the matte dolls head extended solid rib which is marked with the one line address at the breech end. The action is panel scene engraved with a floral scroll design and a hunting dog and game bird engraving on each side. The bottom plate on the action is engraved with the same design and "PATENTED/AUG. 22. SEPT. 19/1882". The engraving extends to the trigger guard, break lever and forearm hardware. There is also a duck in flight in an oval panel on the trigger guard. The matching serial number is marked on the lower tang, water table, barrel flat, and forearm hardware. Double triggers, brown finished Damascus barrels, casehardened action, blue remaining parts, tang mounted automatic safety and mounted with a multi-point checkered walnut splinter forearm with ebony forend insert and round knob pistol grip stock with checkered teardrop flats, colt embossed horn buttplate and silver initial oval. 2 3/4 inch chambers, choked improved cylinder/improved modified, extractor and 14 1/4 inch length of pull.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus. The barrels retain 60% faded original brown finish with most of the Damascus pattern remaining. The receiver retains 30% case colors. The trigger guard is a mix of original blue finish and smooth gray patina. The remaining parts have a smooth gray/silver gray patina. The wood is fine with most of the original varnish remaining, and showing scattered minor dents, dings and scratches. The checkering remains crisp. The markings and engraving are clear. The base of the forearm is bent upward slightly at the frame juncture. Mechanically fine.
