Description:

Post-War, commercial, Model 1928 Thompson Submachine Gun manufactured by the Auto-Ordnance Corporation of West Hurley, New York, c. 1980. The West Hurley Thompson Submachine Guns were newly manufactured, machine guns capable of automatic or semi-automatic fire. These Thompsons feature new production receivers and trigger frames combined with surplus, WWII production barrels, compensators and smaller components. This gun duplicates the pre-war military version of the Colt/Auto-Ordnance Model 1928 Navy Over-Stamp Thompson that was purchased in small numbers by the Navy, Marine Corps and Army prior to Pearl Harbor. The gun has a dull, military blue finish with straight grain, American walnut stock , horizontal forearm and pistol grip. The gun has many of the features found on pre-war Colt and wartime Auto-Ordnance and Savage Model 1928/1928A1 Thompson Submachine guns including: 3rd style Cutts Compensator, finned barrel, bolt actuator mounted in the top of the receiver; adjustable, folding leaf, rear sight; and detachable buttstock. The receiver is notched to accept 50 or 100 round drum magazines. The stock and forearm have military sling swivels. The gun utilizes a number of WWII or post-WWII components that were not utilized on the Colt/Auto-Ordnance Model 1928 Thompsons; these parts include: (1)un-checkered/re-shaped bolt actuator (2) Model 1917 Enfield folding leaf rear sight (3) simplified M1/M1A1 pivot pin and safety and late style stock with cross-bolt reinforcement. The markings on this gun are different from pre-war or WWII Colt/Auto-Ordnance/Savage Model 1928 and Model 1928A1 Thompsons. The Auto-Ordnance "bullet" trademark is roll-stamped on the top of the barrel in front of the rear sight. The left side of the receiver is roll-stamped: "U.S. MODEL 1928 / N0. 1733A" in two lines followed by: "THOMPSON SUBMACHINE GUN/CALIBER .45 M1" in two lines below the rear sight. The right side of the receiver is roll-stamped "U.S. PATENT" above a six-line block of patent numbers below the rear sight followed by "AUTO-ORDNANCE CORPORATION/WEST HURLEY, NEW YORK, U.S.A." in two lines. The trigger frame is not serial numbered. The gun is complete with a refinished, pre-war, Auto-Ordnance 50 round drum magazine with "July 27, 1920" and "Dec. 7, 1920" patent dates and three, blued, WWII, 30 round magazines. This is a registered, transferable, Class III machine gun.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The gun shows only light storage and handling wear and retains close to 98% of the military blue finish. There is some storage rust on the top of the bright-finished actuator. All of the receiver markings are clear. The walnut horizontal foregrip and pistol grip are excellent; the stock has several minor dents and scratches. The 50-round drum magazine has original finish on the interior components and is in very good overall condition. The three 30-round magazines are in very good-excellent condition. This is an excellent example of a Auto-Ordnance West Hurley Model 1928 Thompson Submachine Gun.
