Description:

Model 1928 Navy Overstamp Thompson Submachine manufactured by Colt for the Auto-Ordnance Corporation. Colt manufactured 15,000 Thompson Submachine Guns for the Auto-Ordnance Corporation in 1921. The Marine Corps obtained a small number of these Model 1921 Thompsons in the mid-1920s and used the weapons with success in Nicaragua and China. Based on Marine combat experience, most of the unsold Model 1921 Thompsons were modified by Auto-Ordnance to reduce the rate of fire from 800-600 rounds per minute by adding a heavier actuator and had a Cutts Compensator added to the muzzle. The modified Thompsons were designated "Model 1928 Navy". Auto-Ordnance stamped "U.S. NAVY" above the model designation on the left side of the receiver and over-stamped the "1" in "1921" with "8". The Model 1928 was the most popular variation of the pre-WWII Thompson Submachine Gun. The Marine Corps and Navy purchased a small number of Model 1928 Thompsons in the late 1920s and early 1930s; most 1928 Thompsons were sold to state and local law enforcement agencies. The remaining Colt Model 1928 Thompsons were sold to Great Britain, Sweden and France circa 1940. Only about 5000 of the 15000 Colt Thompson Submachine Guns exist today. This gun has the Colt commercial blue finish found only on the 15,000 Thompson Submachine Guns manufactured by Colt for Auto-Ordnance. The bolt is bright and the stock, pistol grip and foregrip are oil-finished walnut. The nose of the stock is stamped with the small anchor insignia applied to the original stocks manufactured by Remington for the Colt Thompsons. The gun has the second style Cutts Compensator with Cutts logo and patent markings on the top, barrel with distinctive radial cooling fins and vertical foregrip used on commercial 1928 Thompsons. The receiver has the Lyman folding adjustable rear sight. The bright finished bolt is an original Colt component; the only marking is "1" stamped in the actuator slot. The bronze Blish lock is original to the bolt. The blued actuator is a WWII Savage replacement with smooth knob and "S" stamped on the left side. The receiver and trigger frame are both stamped with the matching serial number "13226". The trigger frame appears to have all of the original Colt components including magazine catch, safety and pivot. The top of the receiver is roll-stamped with the Auto-Ordnance "Bullet" trademark ahead of the rear sight. The left side of the receiver is marked "U.S. NAVY/MODEl OF 1928/NO. 13226" in three lines. "THOMPSON SUBMACHINE GUN/CALIBRE .45 AUTOMATIC COLT CARTRIDGE/MANUFACTURED BY/COLT'S PATENT FIRE ARMS MFG. CO./HARTFORD, CONN., U.S.A. is roll-stamped on the left side of the receiver in five lines below the rear sight. The right side of the receiver is roll-stamped: "AUTO-ORDNANCE CORPORATION./NEW YORK. U.S.A." in two lines below the rear sight followed the "1915-1920" patent dates in a six-line block. The butt trap contains a nickel-plated brass oiler. The gun is accompanied by two WWII production Auto-Ordnance, Bridgeport, 50-round drum magazines; three 30-round magazines and five 20 round magazines in a "U.S.M.C." marked WWII magazine pouch and a rubberized, Vietnam era, machinegun barrel bag with sling. This is a fully registered and transferable Class III weapon.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The gun is mostly original with the exception of the Savage actuator and retains at least 85% of the original high polish Colt blue finish. Finish loss is mostly limited to wear along the upper edges of the trigger frame and edges and rear of the receiver. The buttplate shows typical handling wear and retains about 70% of the blue finish. The receiver and frame markings are crisp. The walnut foregrip, pistol grip and stock are all original and in very good condition with scattered handling marks. The gun has no police markings or non-original marks. The two hard-to-find Bridgeport 50-round drums are in very fine condition and retain about 90% of the parkerized finish The stick magazines, magazine pouch and barrel case are all in very good condition. The Colt manufactured, pre-war, Model 1928 Thompson Submachine Guns are classic American firearms. These guns are associated with the Hoover-Era FBI, John Dillinger and the Marine Corps in the "Banana Wars" and China. The Colt Thompson Submachine Gun is probably the most desirable of all fully automatic weapons and one of the most recognized firearms ever manufactured.
