Description:

This is a very unique example of a Model 1906 American Eagle Luger as produced by DWM factory. In all respects this pistol looks like a standard DWM Model 1906 American Eagle Luger pistol, however upon closer examination it is a very unique, maybe one of a kind, experimental Luger, with an unusual two-piece side plate. The fit of the side plate in conjunction with the exposed sear has always been a safety weakness in Lugers. This experiential design appears to counter that weakness by the installation of a two-piece side plate, with a machined/milled slot through the side the upper half of the side plate that uses some form of key safety to fire the pistol. When inserted this key safety will depress the sear bar and allow the pistol to fire. The lower portion of the side plate is spring loaded, via a small traverse plunger, (installed through the frame directly behind the front leg of the side plate) with the top half of the side plate being permanently pinned in place to the side of the barrel extension. However the pistol cannot be fired unless you have this small safety key (not included) inserted into the side plate. Additionally the barrel is not rifled, most likely because the pistol was intended for demonstration purposes of the noted safety mechanism. The chamber area has the "American Eagle" crest with the DWM logo on the toggle with the "Crown/N" commercial proofs with the also matching numbered to the barrel extension and has a single "Crown/N" commercial proof. This model has the correct short style frame and upper receiver, fast taper 4 7/8 inch barrel configuration, grip safety, and polished lower safety area with the correctly marked, "LOADED" extractor. Numbered in the commercial style with full serial number (67098) stamped on the underside of the barrel and front of the frame with the last two digits of the serial number (98) stamped on the various small parts. The front end of the frame is stamped "GERMANY" indicating export outside of Europe. It is complete with one all blue WWII magazine with the aluminum base marked "3389/k/Eagle 63". This is a unique variation and is certainly worth doing further research on.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as finished for experimentation with 90% of the period blue finish overall with the barrel and barrel extension having a dark, dulled blued appearance, that almost looks like matte blue finish. The walnut grips are both in excellent condition overall with nice distinct checkering with minimal handling marks. The pistol has all matching numbers except the magazine. A very unusual early pre-war 1906 Luger pistol.
