Description:

This scaled down rifled musket is marked "BEURET FRERES/A LIEGE" is one of many European-made weapons of various forms that were imported by both the North and South for the Civil War. Similar muskets can be seen on page 75 of William B. Edwards' CIVIL WAR GUNS. The barrel is marked "17" on top with "BF" vertically and "CADETS/CHAUXDEFONDS" on the left above a partially covered Belgian "E/LG/*" proof. "CADETS/CHAUXDEFONDS" is also engraved on the left side of the butt. La Chaux de Fonds is a Swiss city in the French speaking region of Romandie. "BF" marks are found on the lockplate ahead of the hammer, on the barrel bands, barrel, lower tang, and the buttplate. A "M" is seen at the left front of the foremost barrel band and a "8" is present on the bayonet lug with "238/PJ" on the actual bayonet. It features a fixed front sight mounted to the foremost of the three barrel bands and a rear notch sight. The full stock has a straight wrist with two bumps on the lower tang for additional grip.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The musket features an attractive smooth golden brown patina on most of the exposed metal with the barrel still bright beneath the bayonet lug. The lockplate and hammer remain partially bright with a brown patina forming. The stock is fine with various minor dings, marks, and scratches and some more significant wear at the rearmost barrel band and a small crack at the left side of the breech. The action is functional.
