Description:

Manufactured in England, this single-shot breechloading carbine incorporates Whitworth pattern hexagonal rifling to stabilize the bullet. It was nicknamed the "Monkey Tail" by South African and Portuguese troops that were issued it based on the shape of loading lever for the breech. It features blade front and folding ladder rear sights graduated to 800 yards, with ".483/.451" and "WHITWORTH*PATENT" stamped behind the rear sight. The chamber area is marked with "32", "52", "P/C", and "1744" along with several small marks/proofs on the left side, and "WESTLEY RICHARDS/PATENT" and a triangle on the breechblock. The breechblock cover is marked "16" on the inside with a small proof on the rear of the interior. The lock plate is marked "1867" in a triangle next to "WESTLEY RICHARDS & Co". Fixed to a smooth straight wrist stock marked "F.A/1880" opposite the lockplate with a single barrel band/ bayonet lug marked "1744", metal ramrod, and sling swivels with a brass buttplate, forend cap, and triggerguard.

Rating Definition:

Good. The barrel, breechblock, and barrel band are fading to an attractive aged brown patina overall. The lockplate has an aged brown/gray patina and the brass buttplate, forend stop, and trigger guard have an aged patina. The stock has faded varnish and a series of small holes in the butt, scrapes in front of the trigger guard and various marks, scrapes, dings, and scratches throughout. The action functions fine.
