Description:

The caliber .38-40 was first offered in 1879. This rifle was manufactured in 1885 with the Third Model integral dust cover guide rail and a dust cover with serrated grasping grooves on the tail. It is fitted with a bayonet stud style blade front sight (modified blade) behind the magazine retaining ring, a folding ladder rear sight graduated out to 900 yards, saddle ring and stud on the left side of the action, a smooth walnut forearm with single barrel band, and a straight wrist walnut stock with carbine buttplate and trapdoor compartment. It has the two-line address and King's improvement patent marking on the barrel, "38 CAL" on the cartridge elevator and barrel at the breech, the model designation on the upper tang, and the serial number on the lower tang.

Rating Definition:

Good. The blue finish has faded to a mixture of brown and gray patina with light oxidation and pitting. The wood is very good with moderate scrapes and dings from use along with some chips and a thin crack ahead of the barrel band. The action functions very good, and the markings are legible.
