Description:

The only visible marking on this rifle is the "W. Ketland & Co." lock maker's mark below the flash pan. William Ketland & Co. was active 1802 to 1831. The barrel is fitted with standard blade and notch sights. It is mounted with a full length, wide butt maple stock with brass furniture, three silver inlays, and attractive carving including a coiled pattern ahead of the patch box finial. Under the cheekpiece are two staples for securing a vent pick.

Rating Definition:

Fine, in original Flintlock configuration. The barrel is crisp and has some light patina, oxidation, and mild pitting. The lock has primarily a dark brown patina with some spots of gray. The brass has an attractive aged patina. The stock is also fine as period repaired with a nicely repaired break at the wrist, light scratches, some pressure marks, and a few minor chips at the edges. The lock functions fine and has distinct markings. An attractive Golden Age Kentucky!
