Stock: walnut

Description:

The only visible marking is "Unity" engraved above the American eagle design on the silver cheekpiece inlay. It has blade front and notch rear sights and a full length stock with brass furniture including the ornate patch box and smooth forend cap and rococo style raise relief carving most notably on the left side of the butt. The silver thumb plate has a border design that coordinates with the cheekpiece inlay. The patch box and inlay have similar attributes to the several rifles in "Thoughts on the Kentucky Rifle in Its Golden Age" by Kindig including the David Cooley rifle on page 503 and some of the work by famous maker Frederick Sell and indicates the rifle that was most likely copied.

Rating Definition:

Good as custom made. The barrel and lock have traces of artificially aged brown finish mixed with brown patina, oxidation, and mild pitting. The brass has a lightly aged patina. The stock is very good as refinished with attractive carved designs, some small chips and scratches, and minor pressure marks. The lock functions fine. The engraving is very crisp.
