The barrel of this heavy 15 1/2 pound gun is marked "T. BENNETT" between the rear sight and breech. The rifle has the standard notch and blade sights common on American long rifles, but the front sight blade is one and five eighths of an inch long and secured by two dovetails which is rather unusual. The barrel accounts for nearly all the weight and is one and three eighths of an inch across at the muzzle. The lock plate is marked "WARRANTED" and has an engraved game scene as is often found on imported locks used on early American firearms. The full length stock has a brass forend cap and engraved patch box and German silver inlays including a star design on the cheekpiece and a crescent moon on the left side of the butt. The rifle is equipped with double set triggers and includes a wooden ramrod. In "American Gunmakers", T. Bennett is listed as unlocated and is noted as the maker of a hand forged underhammer pistol. Frank Seller's also notes "T. BENNETT" marked guns by an unknown maker in "American Gunsmiths: A Source Book."

Fair. The brass and German silver components have an honest aged patina while the barrel and lock have gray and brown patina and overall light to mild pitting. The stock is fine and has a dark hand rubbed patina underneath a later coat of varnish, dings, scratches, crack at the toe, and some empty holes behind the trigger guard tang. The lock functions fine, and the marking and engraving are legible.
