Description:

This Model 1862 Police revolver was manufactured circa 1863 and features the standard markings including matching visible serial numbers, a checkered one piece grip, and scroll and punch dot engraving similar to the style on the longer barreled Nimschke scroll engraved Model 1862 on page 182 of "The Book of Colt Engraving." The wolf or dog head hammer motif was also commonly employed by Nimschke as was the shell design on the upper back strap and back strap sides. Note the "P" by the serial numbers; this marking was used by Colt to designate parts for special high polish finishes or plating. Note that the grips and hammer match those on the Nimschke engraved Model 1860 Army conversion on page 185. The revolver comes in a modern hardwood case with an Eley Bros. cap tin, dual cavity bullet mold, powder flask, key, and three lead balls.

Rating Definition:

Good as re-plated. 98% plus of the silver plating remains with a lightly aged patina overall and some light pitting showing through the thick plating. The grip is very good with crisp checkering, an attractive naturally aged patina and grain, and some slight chips on the toe and heel on the left side. The engraving and markings are mostly clear but some areas are obscured such as the barrel address. The action functions fine. The refinished, relined case is good with some minor storage wear. The accessories are fine.
