Description:

This is an example of a much sought after, transitional Colt Model 1849 Pocket revolver that was manufactured in 1850 in the overlapping Baby Dragoon/1849 Pocket range. While it is not known how many of these transitional models exist, the 1849 Pocket was introduced in 1850 around serial number 12,000 (this example falls just shortly before that accepted cutoff) . Setting this model apart from the standard Model 1849 Pocket are the square back trigger guard and the angled rear of the frame on either side of the hammer. It has a loading lever and rectangular cylinder stops. The top of the barrel has the two line "-ADDRESS SAML COLT/NEW YORK CITY-" marking. The left side of the frame has the small lettered "COLTS/PATENT" marking. The serial numbers match aside from the replacement wedge (numbered 884). It has post front and hammer notch rear sights and a smooth walnut grip. It comes in a hardwood case with a key, Colt's patented "eagle" powder flask, combination nipple wrench and screwdriver, brass dual cavity Colt patent bullet mold, and a Winchester Repeating Arms cap tin.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus. The revolver has traces of original blue finish and case colors and otherwise primarily a gray patina with some spotting and slight pitting. The grip frame retains 75% plus of the darkly aged original silver plating. The grip is fine with significant "piano" varnish on the right side, and moderate wear on the left side. The right was likely protected by the fact that the gun sits left side up in the case. The action is fine, and the markings including the cylinder scene are clear. The case is fine as repaired with well worn interior, moderate overall storage wear, and a couple of cracks on the lid. The accessories are fine. This is a very rare variation of an early Colt pocket revolver.
