Description:

This is an original example of a U.S. contract Colt 2nd Model Dragoon percussion revolver. This revolver has the distinctive squareback trigger guard and rectangular cylinder stops of the Second Model. The top barrel flat is marked "ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW YORK CITY" and the left side of the frame is marked "COLTS/PATENT/U.S.", (Patent partially visible). The matching serial number is marked on the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard, back strap and cylinder, the partial number "340" on the arbor pin and wedge and "0340" on the loading lever. At least part of the government contract for 1,000 Army revolvers, dated February 4, 1850 was believed to have been filled from the Second Model production. There is a small partial "B" visible on the top of the back strap. The revolver has a casehardened frame and loading lever, the remaining metal surfaces blue and the brass was silver plated. Blade front and hammer notch rear sights and fitted with a one-piece smooth walnut grip with a faint oval cartouche on the lower right side.

Rating Definition:

Good. The metal surfaces have a mottled brown patina with some scattered minor pitting and a few dings, mainly in the area of the wedge and on the cylinder. There is no visible scene on the cylinder and the wedge screw is absent. The brass has a nice natural aged patina with traces of age darkened original silver in the protected areas. The grip is also good with a chip present on the right toe, some moderate lower edge wear and a few minor dings and dents. Unless noted above, the markings are readable. The action is fine. A nice example of a desirable Second Model U.S. Dragoon revolver.
