Description:

Approximately 2,200 of these Richards-Mason style Model 1861 Navy conversion revolvers were produced in the early 1870s. This example falls within the Navy conversion range and has "R. W. M. [anchor]." on the bottom of the barrel behind the ejector rod head. It is marked with the one line "NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA" barrel address, "COLTS/PATENT" over stamped with the two line 1871 and 1872 patent dates on the left, "36 CAL" on the left trigger guard shoulder, the naval battle scene on the cylinder, and matching visible serial numbers. The cylinder has the matching serial number below "COLTS PATENT NO. 557". "W.L." is lightly hand scratched on the butt. It is fitted with a one-piece walnut grip. Included is an unmarked military revolver flap holster produced in the Civil War and a buffed pre-Civil War leather belt with brass "US" belt buckle.

Rating Definition:

Fine as factory refurbished for U.S. Navy. 20% of blue finish remain along with 30% of the case colors. The brass has an attractive lightly aged patina. There are several small dings, patches of spotting and light pitting, and primarily a gray patina where the finish has faded. The grip is fair with numerous scrapes and dings and a few small chips. It is mechanically very good and has mostly crisp markings. The holster is poor with tears, cracking, and a missing latch flap. The belt is very good with moderate rub type wear. This is an overall rare complete set.
