The Colt Open Top Pocket model was one of the first three revolver models produced by Colt specifically for metallic cartridges and was produced in 1871-1872. In Ordnance Department trials the design was rejected and a stronger frame and cartridge was requested. The redesign led to the debut of the Model 1873 better known as the Colt Single Action Army. It has a blade front and notch rear sights on the barrel which is marked with the one-line address on top, the two-line 1871 and 1872 patent marking on the left side of the frame and 75% coverage custom scroll and punch dot engraving. It is fitted with a pair of "one-piece" style grips.

Very good as custom engraved and refinished. 95% plus of the nickel plating remains with some minor marks and spots of pitting showing through. The engraving is crisp. There are a couple of spots of limited pitting on the back strap. The grips are also very good with moderate handling wear, age cracks, and minor shrinking. The action is fine.
