Description:

This revolver is one of only an estimated 4,000 Model 1860s fitted with full fluted cylinders. The revolver comes in a modern hardwood case with fitted interior along with a cap tin, bullet mold, and modern powder flask. The included letter from R. L. Wilson is incredibly detailed and includes the following information. Only 2,000 were produced in this configuration with these markings. This example was shipped on February 19th, 1861, in a twenty-five gun shipment to the Colt Agency on Broadway in New York City. It is a rare variation with the scarce Hartford address on its 7 1/2 inch barrel, varnished "Army-Sized" long grip and grip straps, four screw frame cut for a shoulder stock, early rich blue finish, casehardened frame, and fully silver plated grip straps, all matching serial numbers, and patent marking on the cylinder. "The lower serial numbered New Model revolvers leaving Colt's shipping department generally ended up in the possession of persons of influence or high rank. . . Model 1860 Army Serial No. 1744 was surely intended to be placed in the hands of a connection who could be of assistance in Colt's endless marketing and promotions - possibly even someone personally familiar with Colonel Colt."

Rating Definition:

Good. The grip frame has traces of original silver plating. The exposed brass has an aged patina, and the balance of the revolver has a mottled gray patina with some light pitting and various minor marks. The grip is also good with moderate edge wear, numerous scratches and dents, and some minute chips. The action functions fine. Most of the markings are clear. The case and accessories are fine. As Wilson stated at the end of the included letter, "No. 1744 Model 1860 Colt is worth of the greatest respect as a time-honored artifact of the Civil War and of America's Westward Expansion" and "is worth of being pictured and detailed in the writer's new book project, Sam Colt & His Legacy: Chronicling the Legend. Similarly, this rare Colt qualifies for a fine collection, either a public museum or private holding."
