Description:

This is an exceptional totally original, fully factory documented, example of a Wilbur A. Glahn "Transitional" engraved Colt Single Action Army revolver that was manufactured in 1921. The accompanying factory letter confirms the configuration and that it was shipped to Baker Hamilton Pacific & Company in San Franciso for Ellery Arms Company on May 9th, 1921. It has been beautifully factory engraved embellished with a Grade B (50%) coverage in a transitional Wilbur A. Glahn style. The transitional engraved pieces appear from 1919-1921 and are quite scarce, compounded on this extraordinary Single Action by the rarity of the caliber. The work itself is transitional, from Helfricht style to the style which would soon be established by Wilbur A. Glahn and is exhibited by his work on the 350,000 range SAA's . Further establishing the rarity on this revolver are the deep inset medallion grips, 1921 was the last year in which they were offered. "The revolver has the Colt nickel plated finish on all the metal surfaces The two-piece stocks are inlaid with nickel-silver Colt medallions on each side. The various parts, ejector housing, frame, loading gate, trigger guard, back strap, and cylinder are decorated with flawlessly executed scroll engraving with geometric designs and borders on the recoil shield, front side of the frame and top area of the back strap. The engraving is very similar to the engraving on Colt Single Action serial no. 341201 also engraved by Glahn in 1920 and illustrated on page 295 of "THE BOOK OF COLT ENGRAVING" by R.L. Wilson. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "COLT'S PT.F.A. MFG. Co. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A." in one line. The very desirable caliber designation, "RUSSIAN AND/S&W SPECIAL 44" is roll stamped on the left side of the barrel. The left side of the frame is roll-stamped with the Colt "Three-Date/Two-Line" patent marking which is framed in a border, followed by the Rampant Colt trademark surrounded by an engraved oval border. The assembler's number "3" is stamped above the Colt "Triangle/VP" proof mark on the left front trigger guard bow. The assembly number "435" is stamped on the loading gate and right rear end of the frame, under the grip panel. The full serial number is stamped on the bottom of the frame and on the right side of the back strap and trigger guard underneath the grip and the partial serial number "1804" is stamped on the rear face of the cylinder. All of the visible numbers match. The letter from R. L. Wilson states that this revolver "is a beauty!" and confirms that the work was done by Glahn in the transitional style. "These guns are scarce, and desirable."

Rating Definition:

Excellent with 99% of the untouched original nickel plated finish with only a very light drag line from cocking the revolver. The face of the cylinder does not show any firing marks, which may indicate the pistol is unfired. The grips are also in excellent condition with a nice matching light yellow color on both sides, the undersides of both grips just starting to show some very old age cracks. A very early and exceptional engraved Colt Single Action Army Revolver.
