Description:

This is an example of a Smith & Wesson 1st Model Schofield single action revolver that ws manufactured in 1875. Total production of these revolvers is only estimated at 3,035 of which 3,000 were purchased for the U.S. military and were used during the Indian Wars including by the famous Buffalo Soldiers. This revolver has the "U.S." property stamp on the butt. The barrel has a replaced pinned round blade high profile front sight, and a notch in the barrel latch serves as the rear sight. The left side of the barrel lug is marked with the two line address/patent dates, and "SCHOFIELD'S PAT. APR. 22D 1873" is on the right side flanked by Maltese Crosses. The serial number is located on the butt and the underside of the grip panels. The "L" inspection mark of Ordnance Sub-Inspector Samuel B. Lewis and "P" proofmark are stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug. The "L" is also marked on the frame directly below the cylinder.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The polished cylinder is mostly bright with light pitting and may be a replacement. 50% of the original blue finish remains on the barrel and frame with light scratches and marks throughout and patches of light pitting mostly confined to the muzzle. The hammer and trigger guard have a gray patina. The refinished grips are very good with faint cartouche andsome minor dings and scratches. The action functions fine.
