Description:

Gunmakers with the surname Canivell have been located in records for both Barcelona and Naples around 1720 and 1820. The top of the varying length barrels at the breech are inlaid with the gold hallmark of "crown/CANI/VELL." A very similar if not matching hallmarks is pictured in the entry for Canivell in "Heer Der Neue Stockel." The use of a Roman lock suggests the pair was made in Naples, but both the Spanish "patilla" lock and the Roman lock were used by some makers in each location. The pistols have no sights and are equipped with part round, part octagon smoothbore barrels with engraving and a "wedding band" at the transition. There are several golden inlays on the breech sections in addition to the marks noted above. The locks and brass furniture have floral and scrollwork engraving. The trigger guard bows and side plates have silver inlaid busts, and the thumb plates have the coat of arms of an unknown family. The stocks are dark walnut and have carved accents and are fitted with belt hooks. Each pistol has a wooden ramrod with a plate on the tip.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The iron surfaces have a gray patina with light pitting. The brass is mostly bright with some areas of aged patina. The silver has a lightly tarnished patina. The stock is fair with multiple repaired cracks, a few scrapes and chips, and some small dings. The lock functions but is weak.
