Description:

This oversized blunderbuss is a swivel gun, the type used by the British Royal Navy in the late 18th century and would have been used much like a standard blunderbuss but is capable of handling heavier charges. They were used to defend against boarders or to weaken an opponent's defenses before a boarding attempt. Like a blunderbuss, they provided devastating waves of buck shot. Instead of a dramatic flare at the muzzle, it measures 2 1/2 inches across at the muzzle and is closer to 2 1/4 inches for most of its length but has a much smaller bore closer to a standard blunderbuss (around 8 bore). It has three English proofs on the left side at the breech and "crown/GR" at the center of the lock and "TOWER" on tail indicating it was manufactured at the Tower of London Armory during the reign of King George. It has a nearly full length walnut stock with brass furniture and an iron ramrod with flared tip. Just forward of the lock is a swivel mount with a spike. The use of a spike mount allowed for horizontal as well as vertical adjustment while aiming and also made it easier to remove the gun to relocate it to another part of a ship depending on the location of the enemy or for storage. It comes with a fabric wrapped wooden block for display purposes.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The brass displays an attractive aged patina and has some dings and scratches. The lock and ramrod display brown and gray patina along with some oxidation and mild surface pitting. The mount is mostly an even brown. The stock is fine as sanded and has a partially repaired crack on the forend on the right and numerous light scratches and pressure marks. The lock functions fine.
